SOMA

The Center for Arts & Culture

Welcome to SOMA

SoMa is short for ‘South of Market Street’, a San Francisco neighborhood that was once mostly an industrial district comprised of printing presses, welders, auto body repair shops, and late-night dance clubs.

The abundance of affordable warehouse space became some of the first incubators for the dot-com revolution. Studio artists and dot-com companies flocked to these unique spaces for their natural light and the freedom to be creative. Over time SOMA condos evolved to become more elaborate and luxurious. In the late 2000s the Palms at 4th and Bryant became the first residential tower to move into the mid-to luxury high rise space. Well-known residential developments subsequently built include The St. Regis, Ritz Carlton Residences, Millennium Tower, The Harrison and La Maison. In the past five years ultra-luxury towers commenced construction. including 181 Fremont, Mira, 706 Mission (the new Four Seasons residential tower) and One Steuart Lane. SOMA offers fine dining, artisan coffee shops, luxury hotels, and various forms of entertainment: a more diverse neighborhood in the city would be hard to find.  The world-class SF Museum of Modern Art (MoMa) is located in the heart of SOMA, as well as the AT&T ballpark.

Neighborhoods adjacent to SoMa include South Beach, Mission Bay, Yerba Buena, and Downtown/Financial District – all of which are within walking distance.
